New Senior Living Community Approved for Lewes on Kings Highway

The Sussex County Council has given final approval for a 95-unit independent living development, designed for adults 55 and older.

The project, proposed by LIC Housing, will feature senior-friendly apartments along with a restaurant and a fitness center that will be open to the public. 

It’s intended to fill a gap in local housing by offering a more affordable choice between luxury apartments and full-service assisted living.

Plans include accessible design, wellness services, and outdoor gathering areas to help residents stay active and independent.

With unanimous approval from the County Council, the development marks another step toward expanding housing options for older adults who want to remain part of the Lewes community.

Thompson Island Living Shoreline Project Begins

Construction is underway on the Thompson Island Living Shoreline Project, a major effort led by the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays to protect the island’s eroding coast and restore nearby marine habitats.

About 400 wave-attenuation structures are being placed in shallow waters to reduce wave impact, calm the shoreline, and improve water clarity. 

The project also supports new habitats for fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants.

Thompson Island holds deep cultural importance for the Nanticoke Indian Tribe, who regard it as sacred land. 

This restoration honors that heritage while protecting one of the region’s most vulnerable shorelines from erosion and sea-level rise.

It’s a living solution that grows stronger with time, helping Delaware’s inland bays stay resilient for generations to come.
